Handball Heroes

Honoring American Handball's Past

Handball Heroes is an annual legacy banquet that American Handball Associates stages to honor and celebrate those who have made possible the sport of handball in America. At this event, we have given out the Founders Award to such notables as Peter and Renate Buehning, Laszlo Jurak, Dennis Berkholtz and Mike Cavanaugh, all people who have had a direct bearing on the development of the game in this country. We also give out annually the Cavy Award which supports local organizers for their efforts. We have held the event at the Swim and Sport Club in Flanders, New Jersey, the birthplace of handball in the USA, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, in support of the Detroit Handball Club, and in Fremont, California, where we helped welcome the first class of the SF Cal Heat Hall of Fame. We hope this year to stage Handball Heroes V in Long Beach, CA, to honor all past handball Olympians and let Los Angeles know that our sport is one with which to be reckoned in 2028.

Here's a sample of one of our Handball Heroes events from the summer of 2022.
